This page shows the covers from a series of magazines called Great War Adventures published by The World’s Work (1913) Ltd. & The Captain published by Newnes. They former are undated but it seems they began in 1931-32 and carried on into the 1940’s. There were 4 series (i.e. single issues) per year. By 1940 the title had changed to War Adventures to allow the addition of some stories from that war. 2 companion volumes are also shown.
Each volume contains true stories by servicemen, some original but many culled from existing volumes of memoirs - very similar in fact to Sir John Hammerton’s ‘I Was There’ series.
Authors included Georg Bucher, E. Keble Chatterton, Stephen Graham, Klaxon, Paul Lintier, Patrick MacGill, Paul Maze, Frank Richards, Lowell Thomas & many others.
The Captain
A Magazine for Boys & Old Boys
Published by Newnes from April 1899 to March 1924, the magazine was primarily aimed
at public schoolboys with its mix of adventure yarns, stamp collecting tips & reports
on school OTC units. Its regular contributors included Herbert Strang, Percy Westerman
& Eric Wood.
I only have issues from 1917 & 1918 so any images from the earlier War years would
be much appreciated.
